THE RULE-SET RESET JUST WAS RESET !

Easy come, easy go.

I can't really blame Dr. Barnett too much given the number of irons in the fire he has going right now. Frankly, I couldn't deal with his daily email correspondence much less everything else he's doing in addition and commendably, Tom's putting his family first. Speaking as the father of two young children, I understand where he's coming from on this one.

Most likely, depending on how things shake out with RSR I will still contribute the occasional piece, if that fits what Critt has in mind now that Bob Jacobson is departing as publisher, but it sounds to be far more informal a venture now than before. I'm kind of left hanging with the research I've done for issue # 4, so I may use it here on my blog or perhaps work it up for an Ed. psych journal article instead. Or I'll drop it for now and get started on something I've wanted to write for HNN for a long time. Decisions, decisions.....

Comments:
A have to give Tom a lot of credit for making the right decision - his priorities are in the right place.

This may be a boost for RSR as a new type of venue that will be innovative - the existing constraints as a paid subscription journal may be been too confining.

I am looking forward to more great content - but perhaps in a more casual format.

Hi Stuart,

How did your presentation go ? Are you going to be posting more on the topic or is it proprietary material ?

I don't blame Tom either. After he left the Naval War College, replacing his lost income had to be his # 1 priority. Pretty much he could do that or try to grow a magazine but not both.

I think the original model RSR was emulating - the insider, high-priced, client letter - was just out of reach of the most interested readers. $ 10-20 per annum was probably more realistic and would have brought in a bigger base. What The Economist charges for a subscription is just about the top range of what ppl will pay for policy news in appreciable numbers and RSR wanted twice that amount.

Ironically, my article for # 4 was inspired by the question you asked here a while back on horizontal-vertical thinking. Just FYI.

Check out my blog - I added comments about the presentation and a link to it as well. (I was going to shoot you earlier post a trackback but...)

I am looking forward to your article whenever/where ever it comes out - just let me know!

I am a big believer in Tom's vision, and although the price was steep, I considered it a bargain.
