RECOMMENDED READING

Being very harried today and having to be at work until the late evening I am unlikely to be posting much or commenting tonight...BUT, these are a fine selection !

Simon at Simon World directs us to the IMF magazine's " Next Steps For China" and also to The Jamestown Foundation's look at the influential maverick General Liu Yazhou.

Bruce Kesler at The Democracy Project, takes President Bush to task.

Curtis Gale Weeks at Phatic Communion weighs in on the future of Sino-American
relations.

Dave at The Glittering Eye on System Reliability and Disaster Planning

Razib at Gene Expression has a long and well-considered piece on why Mitt Romney's Mormonism will be his undoing in the G.O.P. at the hands of the Religious Right.

Marc at The American Future on Europe's creeping dictatorship. If you wonder why I don't trust transnational institutions like the poorly-designed ICC, Marc's post sheds some light.

Back to the grind. for me.......

UPDATE:

In order to fulfill a special request from overseas and provide readers with some timely information that I know will be of interest to most of you, CENTCOM.mil is now added to the blogroll. Check it out !

Creeping dicatorship?

It's very hard to take seriously people who use such ridiculous hyperbole.

Mind you I am not a fan of EU creepingness, but the outsized and exagerated fearmongering among US conservo circles in re EU is childish. And typically rather poorly informed.

Hi Col-

The conservative reaction comes from a visceral sense over here that the EU, or rather what its staunchest continental advocates would like it to become, is profoundly alien to American values, inherently and increasingly undemocratic as well latently hostile to American interests.

The whole project has also become unworkable in any event and increasingly unpopular for a variety of reasons with the European public. 90 % of the benefit provided by the EU comes from the free trade zone while nearly all the costs originate in the technocratic micromanagement and byzantine decision-making process, most of which is entirely unnessecary and is being pushed by a narrow elite.

I am well aware of the genesis of the reaction (for all that it largely comes from contemptible ignorance and navel gazing mistaking domestic political concerns for international politics).

As it happens Europe, on left and right, has a stronger statist tradition. Alien to American values? Yes, probably, given the United States is more or less populated by those who fled Europe (plus others of course who have fuck all to do with the European domestic situ).

Dictatorship is an idiotic and comical exageration, however. Undemocratic, well, to an extent but Commission et al pretensions are stalling out.

As to hostile to American interests, well, ... no. That is mere foolishness. That Europe feels some resentment to the US is natural (and recent clumsiness of course does hot help).

Overdone this issue.
