FOLLOW-UP TO RECOMMENDED READING

Sonny at FX-Based has published "In Defense of EBO - Part 2".

Given the drubbing Sonny gives Peters on the details of EBO, I'm even more inclined to believe John's interpretation that Peters was posting up to try and slow the momentum for war against Iran. When a great writer and thinker like Peters is sloppy, sometimes there are reasons.

What drubbing? Are you daft?

"Are you daft?"

At times, yes.

Look, using the effects of WWII strategic bombing to discredit the effectiveness capabilities of EBO in 2006 is an anachronistic argument for reasons that relate about equally to the state of German industrialization and air capabilities. EBO's effectiveness depends upon the target's vulnerability derived from dependency on interlocking comlex systems, most of which were rudimentary during WWII, even in. an advanced state like Nazi Germany.

Does Peters have a general point worth considering about the historical overselling of air power since the days of Billy Mitchell ? Yes. But he's overselling the other side of the equation.

Mark and Anonymous,

I think I made clear in my humble writing that I don't think EBO is the end all, be all for military (and non-mil) operations. I am well aware of the limitations of EBO and airpower. The point I am trying to make is that Peters' attack is based on a historical interpretion that I think is unfair. Peters does not provide an alternative to what he's critiquing other than a return to attrition-based warfare where whoever kills most wins. Our capabilities to truly analyze and then precisely attack the full extent German industrial capabilities was limited at the time. Based on the documents that I've read anlyzing the air campaign against Germany, it seems like we underesimated the resiliancy (there's a word) of the German manufacturing capabilities. The Germans did have to disperse some of their industries as a result of air attacks and that contributed somewhat to the demise of Nazi Germany. Peters does not mention the air campaign against Japan and the psychological impact of that campaign that started with the Doolittle Raiders. I would like Peters to write an essay outlining alternatives to EBO. His apprach for winning wars is basically reduced to "Only killing win wars", a dangerous message to send to our youth in uniform. Lately, all I've seen from Peters is rants and attacks against the Air Force. Maybe Peters has an ulterior motive like John Robb implies.

Mark,

Thanks a million for the mention and link.

Anonymous,

I don't have a lot of respect for anonymous commenters. It'easy to insult when you remain anonymous. If you feel so strongly about it, why don't you comment on my blog FX-Based, which I am guessing, you read? You can also send me an e-mail through my Blogger profile.

Take care.

I would think after the disaster that has been Iraq, Peters does have an ulterior motive, though he's putting the blame for Iraq wrongly on the Air Force and EBO and missing the target, which should be Pres. Bush, Rumsfeld and the military leaders who signed off on the fiasco.

Interestingly, Peters wrote a column last week promoting "talking with Tehran".
